Talking Stars Film Club – Dallas Buyers Club

The 2013 film Dallas Buyers Club is Becky’s first addition to the Talking Stars Film Club. The regular panel: Becky, Darren and Kira, discuss the film, which tells the real-life story of Ron Woodroof, a man diagnosed with AIDS in the 1980s when the disease was barely understood and was a sure death sentence. Not content with being told he has a few months to live, and finding the few legal treatments at the time ineffective, Ron seeks alternative treatments across the border in Mexico and later begins smuggling these treatments into the US, creating a “buyers club” where members pay for a share of these non-regulated treatments. Because these treatments are not regulated by the FDA, laws are passed that make it illegal for anyone in the US to use them, so it becomes a fight to determine if patients who are terminally ill have the right to seek out treatments that can help them, regardless of whether it’s regulated or not. The panel will discuss the message of the film, the lengths the two male leads went through to realize their roles and whether the film’s performance holds up four years after its premiere.
